Booklets Spire
This game is a print and play game, using the classic single-paper 8 pages booklet template (see below).
The game consists of two pages: A Map Booklet and an Encounter Booklet.
The game is playable, but the printed instructions needs updating. I am also trying to figure out one specific rule, but I have decided to still post the game. Please follow the instruction below over the ones on the booklets for now.
What make this game special is that the download link points to an API generate two brand new booklets to play.
How to Play
Setup
- Generate a run using the download link. This link generate a two new booklets on every download.
- Print and fold both pages (see How To Print below)
- Grab a pencil with an eraser..
- Start at Paragraph 1.
Stats to Track

Any Power you find is used to upgrade a skill immediately.
Each Turn
- Read the current paragraph.
- Apply any effect listed (see Encounter Types).
- Choose one of the available routes and flip to that paragraph number.
- Repeat until you reach Victory or Defeat.
Encounter Types
- Start - Your journey begins here.
- Skirmish - Fight a basic enemy. Win to proceed.
- Strange Event - A Skill Check. Gain a Power or Action on success.
- Skill check: Use the least played Action, then count the instructed number of checkbox to the left (←) or right (→) from the first available checkbox of that Action, counting even selected boxes (wrapping around edges). Add that checkbox value to your skill. Success if the total (Skill + Checkbox Value) is equal or greater than the "vs" value.
- Campfire- Recover HP or train for a Power.
- Elite - A tougher fight with better rewards.
- Treasure Cache - Gain Actions.
- Boss - The final challenge. Defeat it to reach Victory!
Encounters
The encounters take place un a separate booklet, the Encounter Booklet. The paragraph in the Map Booklet will tell you what page to turn to, and what stats to use.
For example, if the encounter reads: Face p. 4 of encounter booklet using 5/2/2
You must turn to page 4 of the Encounter Booklet and write those stats on the next available line in the grid. (Be careful: The first box of the grid is for the paragraph number where the encounter take place.)
Then you play the following actions until either you or the enemy reach 0 hp:
- Choose an Action
- You must choose any Actions with the less uses, the less checkbox. If they all have the same number of checkbox then you can choose any Actions.
- Apply the Actions.
- The Encounter reply with the number in the checkbox. If the Encounter reply with a counter action (Attack and Defense, Mag Attack and Mag. Defense) then you must subtract the counter. For example:
- If you attack by 5 and the Encounter reply with 2 Defense, then you only do 3 damage.
- If you see that the next move will result in an attack and play a Defense, it will reduce the Attack in the reply.
- If your Action is not replied, or replied with an unapplicable action, then it goes through in full.
- The Encounter reply with the number in the checkbox. If the Encounter reply with a counter action (Attack and Defense, Mag Attack and Mag. Defense) then you must subtract the counter. For example:
- If both participants in the Encounter has more than 0 Hp, take another actions.
Winning & Losing
- Victory: Defeat the boss paragraph - you survived the run!
- Defeat: If your HP hits 0 at any point, the run ends.
Printing the One-Sheet Booklet
The generated booklet is designed to fold from a single 8.5 × 11 sheet printed landscape:
- Fold and cut to create an 8-page mini-zine.
- The pages have a 5 mm border, so print the page "borderless" or "full size". Inkjet printers will print the whole frame and laser printers might cut a a border but the booklets are made to print around it, the missing drawn frame is not important.
- You need to make a cut in the middle of the paper. Doing the Mountain Fold in the middle of the page first and the two Valley Folds on each sides (between step 2 and 3 below) makes the cut easier.
- The first row in the steps below is the "final product" and can be ignored. Then the instructions goes from top to bottom:

Note
This is not AI, it's string based pool procedural generation, like in the good 'ol days. It's also not perfect, so don't be angry if the run seems impossible. I will certainly try any that seems to be if you drop the seed in the comments.

The link is an API hosted in a simple Azure Function, serving a new set of two booklets. Every Download generate a new set
The game is designed to play independently of the booklet used, the Map is designed to work with any Encounters, but the API always offers 2 pages.
Note: Sometime the API overflow and push some content on a 3rd page. I will add a filter to drop PDF with more than 2 pages, but for the moment just ignore anything with 3 pages and re-generate a new run by re-downloading.
